This page describes the way the Inbox works to allow you to confirm or change the segments automatically generated from your uploaded log files.
When you upload a log file, GPSLog Labs compares the recorded points in the log file with the places you have defined.
If the track passes through a place, a "session" is created to record how much time you spent at that place. The sections of the log file between the recognised places are treated as "commutes" or "circuits".
GPSLog Labs will automatically label the log segments if it can, but many times it will not be able to determine where your track started or stopped. It will assign those log segments to the special Other place. You can change the start/stop place any time it has been assigned to Other or "guessed" by GPSLog Labs. If there was an exact match, you won't be able to change it directly.
If you are inside a building, or a tunnel or somewhere where your logging device loses the GPS signal, the log will be chopped at that point too.
After you upload a log file, it will be queued for processing.
Once GPSLog Labs has chopped a log file into a series of sessions at places and commutes between places, it is placed into your Inbox where you need to confirm the decisions it has made.
If GPSLog Labs has correctly identified and labelled your log file, click the Confirm button. This will move the non-junk segments down to the lower portion of the inbox where you can tag them and assign them to routes.
To tag a log in your inbox, click the checkbox on the left, or click the "add a tag" icon:
A toolbox will slide out from the bottom of the table allowing you to select tags to add to the log.
After clicking "Add Tag" the page will reload showing the newly added tag:
GPSLog Labs will automatically create routes between places the first time they are used. You can rename these automatically created routes if you want.
If there is only one route between two places, GPSLog Labs will automatically assign the log to it, otherwise, you will have to choose which possible route the log belongs to.
To assign a log to a route, click the Select route link or choose from the drop down list:
Using the Select route page will provide a lot more detail about the available routes and highlight the best matches automatically:
The inbox will be updated showing the selected route:
Coming soon: More help pages on how tags and routes work and what to use them for and what the other inbox tabs are for.
If you start your device logging away from a place you have configured, or it doesn't lock onto the GPS signal in time, or your batteries go flat before you reach your destination, GPSLog Labs will mark the start or stop place as Other.
To change the start or stop place for a log segment, choose the place from the drop down list:
The row will go green to indicate the place has changed, and will be applied when you click the Confirm button.
If the log was to or from a new place that you haven't yet added to GPSLog Labs, you can click the Add a new place at start button. This will take you to the add place screen where you can choose a name for the place. After adding the place, your log file will be queued for reprocessing and GPSLog Labs will "cut" the log accordingly.
There will occassionally be cases where you want to chop a log file up differently to what GPSLog Labs does, but can't or don't want to add more places to change it. For example:
GPSLog Labs lets you handle these situations by manually creating segments by selecting portions of the log file based on a start and stop time.
First, select the existing segment of the log file containing the time period you're interested in:
A graph of the speed vs time for that segment will be shown in step 2:
The following image shows the result of selecting a portion of the log by dragging a selection on the speed vs time graph:
Dragging a selection on the graph:
When you click Create new segment the existing segment will be split into 3 parts, the bit before your selection, your selection and the bit after your selection. If your selection goes to the end of the segment, only two new pieces will be created.
These pieces will be sent back to the inbox for "confirmation" and this means that you can select more portions if you want or use the merge segments/remove stops tools to perform more complicated editing.
In the future you will also be able to:
GPSLog Labs will often chop a log file into "too many" pieces. The most likely cause is that you have gone past a place that you don't always stop at and would like the log to go directly from the start to the finish, without the intervening stop. You may also get extra segments if your logger loses the GPS signal.
To remove such a stop, click the checkbox in the Merge segments column between the log segments you want to merge into a single segment.
The row will go red to indicate the cut will be removed, and the change will be applied when you click the Confirm button.
